Quarry Farmers & Ranchers market: Roots of Wholeness

We try to stock up on snacks and healthy foods when we vacation, bringing our on cooler packed full of healthy snacks, but also leaving space for the goodies we find along the way!

Well,this weekend we took a trip to San Antonio with the family, and were on our way to Wholefoods in the Quarry Market, when we discovered a Farmer’s Market located near the Wholefoods parking lot! Uh, score!!!! This is what we live for folks! I love supporting hard-working farmers & small businesses such as these; they hold a true passion for what they do and I appreciate it more than they will ever know.

There were a lot of vendors lined up in the parking lot, but my favorite was the Roots of Wholeness stand!

They let us sample their fermented beets, carrots & ginger, and garlic kraut! I have never tasted fermented foods that were so flavorful and fresh! They also had beet kvass, kefir & the most delicious strawberry kombucha! People of all ages swarmed to their stand to taste their delicious krauts!

A few years ago I couldn’t say I was a fan of many fermented foods, but after we started eating paleo & choosing to put healthier foods into our bodies, my palate (among other things) changed dramatically!

Fermented cultured vegetables have been used for healing purposes for thousands of years. Fermented vegetables have large amounts of potent active, living, friendly aerobic bacteria strains; the most popular being lactobacillus. During the culturing process, lactic acid is produced which acts as a natural preservative for the foods which are fermenting, ensuring the foods do not rot and putrefy. The starches and sugars in the vegetables are converted into lactic acid which helps in the growth of aerobic friendly bacteria. In the beginning stages of introducing cultured foods, you may experience increased gas and detoxification. This is expected and is a welcomed good sign for it represents cleansing. These symptoms will subside once your body becomes more balanced.

I could tell that Roots of Wholeness are very passionate about what they do & that makes my heart so happy! They are eager to share their knowledge about fermented foods to all they meet, and I think it is great that they are out there doing what they love & helping others discover foods that their bodies will be thankful for! 🙂
