One BIG thing I have noticed during this detox aside from the improvement in my mood, appearance and energy is that we are actually saving money on our groceries. Planning ahead and preparing meals before or each day has allowed us to keep away from mid-week grocery hauls that include piling in extras like chips, chocolate, in addition to an over haul of fruit. I’m not saying fruit is bad, but this detox has helped me re-evaluate how much fruit I’m eating, and it’s probably too much. BUT, I usually get date rolls (they are these deliciously sweet dates covered in coconut flakes) and cha cha chia chunks (also full of sugar) and dark chocolate, but I’ll be honest, I’m really not picky when it comes to the sweet stuff and that alone has helped me to realize how big this sugar addiction is for me. Other than the natural sweetness of fruit, none of that (even dark chocolate) sounds appealing to me right now. Have my taste buds forgot the flavor? My mind seems to remember how the taste made me feel (temporarily good), but do I honestly miss the taste itself? I think not. It’s such a strange psychological battle with sugar & it’s definitely something to be concerned about.
So, it’s been a a couple of days since I have posted and although I meant to post yesterday, yesterday ended up being such a trying and difficult day. Nothing seemed to be going right, and somehow among the craziness of snuggling and counseling my power-struggling preschooler and trying to teach my toddler how to put his endless trail of toys away(along with detouring his countless attempts to wreak havoc by pushing our table chairs to the counter), I really just had to laugh. In some of those moments of yesterday, I wanted nothing more than to sit alone and nibble on a piece of dark chocolate…in peace. I know that sounds horrible, doesn’t it? Well, I’m being honest, and honestly it was just one of those days. Nothing that snuggles, love and meditation can’t fix ❤
Things did get better, and no chocolate was consumed. However, I did take a nibble out of the pink plastic play food doughnut my preschooler brought me 😉 ❤ AND, on my way out to town, I received the sweetest letter from my dear, best friend Nikki!
Let’s just say, this letter made my week! It actually brought me to tears, and totally brightened my day! I’m beyond blessed to have a friend like her ❤ She is one of the most understanding and caring people I know & She inspires me in so many ways. I’m one lucky gal 🙂
So back to the detox:
The kids aren’t on the detox with us, but I can tell you that they have been eating much healthier and are definitely eliminating a decent amount of sugar from their diets. Like I mentioned before, even my seven year old has been asking if there is sugar in food/meals we didn’t prepare ourselves!
My hope is to instill a healthy foundation for this kiddos to walk on, one that will help them to choose healthy, wholesome, nutritious foods on their own.

Today (day 13) I am feeling really good. This whole no sugar thing is starting to feel normal. Even though the cravings have been gone for a while, I will admit it has been an adjustment going through everything, in the grocery store, or at home and reading every word on the label to make sure, and double check it does not have sugar. AND how much sugar, at that. I can’t count how many times I have picked up a product to find not only did the product have added cane sugar, brown sugar or one of it’s sugar substitute relatives, but it had a lot of it, too! It’s no surprise why we’re all addicted to sugar when you open your eyes and see that sugar is literally in everything. Not good.
While trying to decide what I wanted for breakfast, I sat to enjoy a huge cup of lime water and did a little browsing that led me to this video that features neuroscientist Dr. Nicole Avena & the addictive nature of carbohydrates in our modern food environment. So, after my water, I decided I wasn’t really in the mood for eggs, or any egg creation, but I was actually craving a salad. SAY WHAT?! Although strange, I can’t really complain. Hello, I’m craving a salad for breakfast… where is the old Brandi and what have you done with her? Hehe. I can definitely deal with this!
I mixed together wild caught tuna, an avocado and cilantro & then placed in on top of my mandala salad. Delicious organic goodness! I used the lime as ‘dressing’ which worked just fine. It’s not the creamy or oily dressings I’m used to, but I’m warming up to it & I know it’s gotta be so much better for my body.
